Erdal Mandel has everything. What he doesn't have is an answer to the simplest question of all: who is he when no one is watching?

A brilliant mind, a fortune, and a mother who chose him out of all the children in the world. In the summer of 2015, after his father's death, Erdal agrees to lead the flagship tour of his own travel company in person: two weeks across Turkey, from Istanbul to Cappadocia, with twelve travelers from around the world.

With him come his mother, who is beginning to forget him, and a voice: Ismael Kara, his lifelong partner, who speaks to each traveler through discreet earpieces. Earpieces that listen as much as they whisper.

Among the ruins of Troy and Ephesus, in the village where he was born, and deep in the underground cities of Cappadocia, the travelers begin to change, one by one, each pushed toward a private fault line. And all the while, letters keep arriving from Beatriz, a Venezuelan nurse who writes in mirror script and seems to know something about Erdal that he isn't ready to see.

A literary novel about identity and adoption, about psychological manipulation, and about the courage to call things by their name.

She is left-handed, a nurse, and Venezuelan. Her letters arrive throughout the journey, written the way Leonardo filled his notebooks. This is the first: a decalogue.

Querido Erdal:

Te mando un decálogo. No es un tratamiento; es una posología.

Tres.

Ocho. Come.

Diez. No dejes cabida a Ismael.

B.

Querido Erdal,

I'm sending you a decalogue. It isn't a treatment; it's a dosing schedule.

Three. Go easy on good Turkish wine. The bad stuff, abuse all you like: it can defend itself.

Four. Walk. Anxiety is an animal that needs walking, and I'd rather you walk it than have it walk you.

Five. Dress well. Not for anyone else: well-dressed men take longer to lie to themselves in the mirror.

Eight. Eat. A genius on an empty stomach is just an irritable man with a good memory.

Nine. Keep listening to music. Nobody else in the world knows what an adagio tastes like. Tell me.

Ten. Leave no room for Ismael.

He was a kind and professional man who knew the history and traditions of his country in depth. He accompanied us, answered our questions and helped us understand what we were seeing.

And yet, when the journey ended, I was left with a feeling I had never experienced so consciously: after so many days together, I did not feel I had come to know him as a person. I knew his name, his voice, his manner. But who was Erdal when he stopped being our guide?

I had no wish to uncover his private life or reconstruct his biography. What began to interest me was precisely what I did not know. And there I found a literary possibility.
